Will Wenger’s Favouritism Cost Arsenal Yet Again?

Arsenal v Chelsea - Premier League

It’s early days in the season but Arsenal are fourth on the Premier League log and are currently second in their Champions League group behind PSG. Whether it is a good start only time will tell. However fans are unhappy we the team’s recent performance some are expecting better results, Wenger on the other hand continues to make costly decisions.

Arsenal so far this season?

Arsenal have only lost once in eight months and that defeat came at the start of the season against Liverpool, from there on they have gone on an 18 game unbeaten run in all competitions with a record of 12 wins and six draws, scoring 42 goals, conceding 13 and keeping eight clean sheets. What this shows so far is Arsenal haven’t lost (After the Liverpool defeat) but they haven’t won either. However Arsenal are still in the title race three points from the top and in the Round of 16 of the UCL, and them finishing second isn’t such a bad thing because they can avoid teams like FC Bayern and (maybe) Real Madrid.

Wenger’s selection process?

This season Wenger has opted to switch Alexis Sanchez into a centre forward role which has paid dividends because Alexis has managed to be involved in 13 of Arsenal goals (eight goals and five assists) in 17 appearances this season. He is currently Arsenal’s top goalscorer and with Alexis playing forward Arsenal look much quicker upfront plus Alexis does a lot of pressing. However, Wenger’s decision to bring Ramsey back into the squad, and playing him out of position is costing the team dearly. In all fairness the slack Ramsey is getting from Arsenal fans is disgusting and unfair because in the first place he’s not even playing his original position. Ramsey’s best position is in a number 10, a few season’s back

However, Wenger’s decision to bring Ramsey back into the squad, and playing him out of position is costing the team dearly. In all fairness the slack Ramsey is getting from Arsenal fans is disgusting and unfair because in the first place he’s not even playing his original position. Ramsey’s best position is as a number 10, in 2013/14 he played there and it resulted in him scoring 15 goals and in the Euros he excelled in a similar role. However everyone can see this apart from Wenger and in the last two games Ramsey looked below par. Against Manchester United Ramsey was slowing down the attack, his first touch was poor, he was misplacing passes and Jenkinson wasn’t getting any defensive support from him whatsoever. Against PSG Ramsey was playing a box to box role and he wasn’t that bad. It’s worth saying he wasn’t good either because he was struggling against a PSG team that had Motta, Verratti & Krychowiak dominating it. Carzola is missing heavily in the team but Granit Xhaka is around to replace him.

Xhaka might not provide creativity like Santi but what he does is he stabilizes the midfield which allows Ozil to be an excellent number 10 which benefits the likes of Walcott and Iwobi. However, each time he’s on the bench Arsenal struggle to get things going. Bellerin is injured yes, the decision to bring in Jenkinson in isn’t bad defensively because so far he’s been solid, his one-on-one defending has been good, if you look at the goals Arsenal has conceded in the games he has featured, he is not to be faulted for any. So him getting slack from the media AND the Arsenal fans is silly.

Who is to blame For Arsenal’s current performances and what should be done to change this for Arsenal to be serious contenders?

Arsene Wenger?

Wenger’s selection process has been horrible. The decision to play Ramsey out of position will forever cost Arsenal, because him being on the pitch is disturbing the team’s flow. The decision to not start Xhaka is also hurting the team, because with him not being on the pitch the midfield looks unstable especially against the big teams, as a result Wenger takes really, really long to make subs, which has to stop.

The Fans?

Arsenal fans are utterly embarrassing, worst home support in England. Instead of cheering their team on and showing support to their players, all the fans do is walk out 10 minutes before the game and boo the team when results don’t go as expected. This is a needless display from the fans which needs to stop.

What can be done?

Arsenal Wenger has to bring Xhaka back into the team and he has to consider benching Iwobi and starting Alex Oxlade Chamberlain. If he wants to persist using Ramsey then he has to play Ozil slightly wide (the role he plays for Germany) and Ramsey in his number 10 role so that, he can return to his best, Wenger should also consider resting Ozil and Alexis in the game against Bournemouth. (4-2-3-1)

Cech:

Jenkinson, Mustafi, Laurent, Monreal:

Xhaka, Coquelin:

Walcott, Ramsey, Ox:

Giroud.
