Growing up with autism in Newport in the southern part of Wales, football was an escape place or should I say happy place for now 21 year old semiprofessional footballer Luke Degilbert.
Luke began playing football at the age of 8 for Eveswell before making the move to Riverside Rovers. As a boy Luke was a fan of Leeds he tells me, who he still likes but “now I support Newport and Liverpool.”
Luke currently plays for Newport Dragons, the disability team for Newport County, the club he has loved and adored since the beginning. Luke can play as a full back, center half, or striker he tells me. Very versatile I must say. This September Luke will be playing in a charity match and captaining his side.
When I asked where he wants/sees his career going, Luke said “Well I’m hoping to play for Wales disability football team next season and do well for my country and in future hopefully get scouted.”
After his playing days, Luke would love to return to Newport Dragons and become a coach.
