Euro 2016 Predictions – Winner, Top Goalscorer, Surprise Package And More

Euro With Euro 2016 just a matter of weeks away the excitement and the hope of 24 nations is building. While some may not fancy their chances at glory, there is always a chance, however small, for each of the 24 countries that have qualified for this tournament. After all, this tournament is a little less predictable and straightforward as the World Cup is. Here, I have a go at predicting some of the outcomes of the Euro 2016 tournament…

Winners- Germany

Lukas Podolski

There’s really only one place to start and that’s with the winners of the whole competition. Germany have strength in depth in every single position and i think that this will put them in good stead for the tournament. Mario Gomez, Manuel Neuer, Mesut Özil, Mats Hummels are players I feel will come to the fore and step up to the plate when they are needed the most and if these guys hit their stride they will be very difficult to play against. Germany to win consecutive international tournaments.

Runners Up- Spain

I would have gone for France for this but due to the way that I predicted the results of the tournament France faced Germany in the semi-final. On paper Spain will undoubtedly have one of the strongest starting 11’s in the whole tournament but their biggest downfall is the lack of a real world class centre-forward and I think this is the reason that they will just come up short against the Germans in the final.

Top Goalscorer- Mario Gomez

A German topping the goalscoring charts of an international tournament has became an all too familiar sight but due to the international retirement of Miroslav Klose shortly after the 2014 World Cup final there’s a chance for another German striker. Mario Gomez will more than likely lead the line for Germany in the tournament. Gomez’s ability to score any type of goal and him playing in the same team as Özil means I have chosen him to top the goalscoring charts.

Most assists- Mesut Özil

Not a category that you usually see someone predict but I felt it fitting seeing as this man is the assist master. Only one winner of this award for me and that’s Özil. He’s one of the players I think will play a key role in Germany reaching the final, and in my opinion, eventually winning the competition. If Özil can hit form his potential partnership with Mario Gomez could be a very dangerous one.

Player of the Tournament- Antoine Griezmann

In the past year or two Griezmann has got better and better and will be one of France’s key players heading into the tournament. Coming off the back of a great season for Atlético Madrid his confidence will be high. Backed by the support of the vast number of French fans due to them being the hosts I have a feeling that Griezmann will set the tournament alight. With his fast feet and deadly finishing, Griezmann will be one to watch out for.

Surprise Package- Poland

For the surprise package of the tournament I have gone for Poland. When you have a world-class striker in your team you always have a chance and in Robert Lewandowski they certainly have that. His goals alone will be a big bonus for them and along with other tidy players such as Łukasz Piszczek, Grzegorz Krychowiak and Jakub Błaszczykowski I feel that they could certainly surprise a few teams and continue on into the later stages of the tournament.

How will England do?- Semi-finals

Compared to England’s usual high standards, expectations for Euro 2016 are low. With the squad that we have named a lot of people think that will we struggle and that we won’t last very long in the tournament. However, I genuinely think that we will surprise a lot of people and go further than they think. We have some very good players and some of them have had great seasons and if we utilise them properly we could be onto something good. I can see Harry Kane doing the business and firing us all the way to the semi finals.
